Proclamation - Bone and Joint Decade Awareness Week

WHEREAS, President George W. Bush has proclaimed the years 2002-2012 as National Bone and Joint Decade; and

WHEREAS, musculoskeletal disorders, such as arthritis, back pain, osteoporosis, childhood musculoskeletal conditions and major limb trauma, are a leading cause of physical disability and pose a significant and increasing burden on American citizens; and

WHEREAS, musculoskeletal conditions adversely affect the occupational and social lives of one in every seven Americans, including thousands of people throughout the state of North Dakota, costing billions of dollars in treatments and lost productivity; and

WHEREAS, patients suffering from musculoskeletal conditions, as well as the healthcare professionals who care for them, including orthopaedic surgeons, are joining together to advance the understanding and treatment of musculoskeletal disorders through prevention, education, and research; and

WHEREAS, the North Dakota Orthopaedic Society is working with partners across the state to educate the public about prevention activities and treatment options; and

NOW, THEREFORE, as Governor of the State of North Dakota, I do hereby proclaim October 12-20, 2005, BONE AND JOINT DECADE AWARENESS WEEK in the state of North Dakota.
