Issue Position: Taking Care of our Finest Generation

Health care costs have risen steadily over decades and at an attempt to curb rising costs, President Obama implemented the Affordable Care Act (ACA aka Obama Care). The idea behind the ACA was to provide health insurance coverage to every American, and therefore relieving a financial burden on health care. The financial burden on health care primarily stems from another government regulation that says that they are unable to turn down treatment due to a lack of insurance. What the Affordable Care Act has done since its implementation has increased health insurance costs by 500% in some cases. This has caused health insurance companies to go bankrupt and in many instances, close. As more and more health insurance companies close, there is less and less competition, allowing oligopolies and monopolies to create more control over the market price. Bottom line, less competition is bad for the marketplace.

So where does our experienced generations fit in? Well picture this, you are told that you have to abide by a set of rules for your entire life, so that you can prepare for the twilight years and financially position yourself to live comfortably. Well, just as the largest populated generation is about to enter retirement age, the government not only changes the rules, but changes the entire platform in which the rules were developed. Now, because of healthcare reform, our retirement homes are financially stressed to the breaking point, causing more cuts in the care industry, and even closures. With less and less of these facilities open, this will cause people to travel farther and farther to find care, and still these facilities may not have the faculty needed to run efficiently. We need to slow, if not stop this process and to once again take care of those that have taken care of us for all of these years.
