Statement on the Nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court

Senator Reed stated, 'The confirmation of a Justice to the Supreme Court is one of the most consequential processes the Senate undertakes. It requires thorough research, review and discussion of the nominee's qualifications. Ms. Miers will have the opportunity to explain her views before the Judiciary Committee, and I look forward to carefully studying her record and her responses to questions during the hearing process. I am glad that Justice O'Connor has stated that she will remain on the Court until a replacement is confirmed so that the Senate can conduct a full review without any artificial time constraints. I do hope that Ms. Miers is dedicated to the highest standards of our legal system and understands the importance of building consensus. I look forward to learning more about Ms. Miers from the Judiciary Committee's hearings, and it is my hope that she will be more forthcoming in her answers before the Committee than was newly-confirmed Chief Justice John Roberts."
