In New Ad About Her Husband, Mills Pledges to Fight to Lower Cost of Health Care in Maine

Press Release

Date: Sept. 24, 2018
Location: Farmington, ME

The Mills for Governor campaign today released its second ad of the general election, named "Stan", after Janet's husband. The ad conveys the story of Janet's personal struggle with a confusing and unfair health care system in the wake of Stan's stroke, which ultimately claimed his life four years ago.

For the year between Stan's stroke and his death, Janet learned firsthand what thousands of Maine families go through every year -- a complex and confusing health care system, rejection letters from insurance companies, and unaffordable prescription drugs. This is why Janet is so determined to ensure that every Maine person and every Maine family has access to affordable, high-quality health care. Meanwhile, her opponent, Shawn Moody, has said health care is a privilege, not a right.

"Stan was the light of my life, so when he suffered a debilitating stroke I was devastated. Then add to that pain the crushing costs of prescription drugs and insurance companies who are more concerned about their bottom-line than the health of our loved ones, and it can feel almost impossible. That's not right," said Janet. "But it's what I went through, and it's what thousands of Maine families go through every day. That's why it's time for new direction. As governor, I will fight like hell to lower the cost of health care in Maine and to make sure that every person has access to high-quality coverage, regardless of where they live in our state."

The 30-second spot will begin airing today as part of a six-figure broadcast buy in the Portland and Bangor media markets and will include a digital buy as well.

The complete transcript for "Stan" is below:

Janet:

33 years ago, I met and married my husband, Stan. He was a widower with five young daughters.

We had a really good life.

A few years ago, he had a stroke, and he was in and out of hospitals for a year before he passed away.

What we were going through -- dealing with high deductibles, the huge cost of prescription drugs -- was nothing different than what thousands of Maine families go through.

So, I'm running for governor to fight for them, to lower costs, to work for a system that works for us.

Earlier this month, the Mills for Governor campaign released its first TV ad of the general election -- "Above and Beyond" -- which can be seen HERE.
