Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro

Nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Congresswoman Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) issued the following statement on the nomination of Harriet Miers to the Supreme Court today.

"Harriet Miers has made great strides for women in the practice of law. But much is still unknown about her views on issues critical to the direction of the country. With Justice O'Connor often casting the deciding vote on a narrowly-divided Court, the stakes are high in selecting her replacement.

"Before Harriet Miers is confirmed to the Supreme Court in a lifetime appointment, she must demonstrate a commitment to protecting the individual rights and freedoms guaranteed by the Constitution and upheld by the Supreme Court. The Judiciary Committee process will help determine whether Harriet Miers deserves a lifetime seat on the Supreme Court."
