Congressman Anthony G. Brown (MD-04) released the following statement on Secretary of Defense James Mattis' leadership and working relationship with Congress to ensure the Department of Defense is prepared to face America's 21st century security challenges.

"It is my belief that Secretary Mattis has consistently held the nation's security, the modernization of our military, and troop readiness as his top priorities, despite the many crises created by the President of the United States," said Congressman Anthony Brown. "Secretary Mattis has been a consistently good partner with Congress in our collective mission to support our men and women in uniform and prepare America for power struggles with China, Russia and other state actors.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Secretary Mattis understands the important choices we must make to retain the ability to defend ourselves and what we stand for. I have never doubted his service to our country, nor his military acumen. As an Army veteran and a Member of Congress who has visited servicemembers around the globe, I know our men and women in uniform aren't focused on each other's politics -- they're concerned with the mission at hand. As a member of the House Armed Services Committee, I understand the long road ahead of us to modernize our armed forces, and how difficult this mission becomes when our top military leaders are undermined by petty politics emanating from the White House. Secretary Mattis is an important partner for Congress, and his removal would be a great disservice to the country."
