Issue Position: Michael Rulli Will Fight For Criminal Justice Reform

Issue Position

Date: Jan. 1, 2018

The U.S. criminal justice system sends people to prison as a first response instead of a last resort and from Michael Rulli's perspective that is just plain wrong and the need for reform is one of the most challenging issues of our time. Studies have shown that the longer prisoners are incarcerated, the more likely it is that they will offend again once released. Under the present system, the cost to the taxpayers of Ohio is enormous and must be addressed.
To be successful, goals of such reform must include decreasing the United States' prison population, reducing prison sentences and eliminating mandatory minimum sentences for low-level drug offenders. Drug cases particularly are a concern of Michael Rulli. As an example, he points out the sentences for crack cocaine are double that of other serious drug offenses, raising issues of race and social status as playing a role in harsh sentences for crack.
Michael will take the fight for reform directly to the State House in his first term as Senator.
