Rep. Marshall Discusses Trade Opportunities with Cuban President

On Monday, Congressman Marshall, sat down with Cuban President, Miguel Díaz-Canel. In this meeting, Rep. Marshall and President Díaz-Canel discussed trade opportunities.

"As we are working to shore up our trade agreements, we are overlooking an opportunity that lies just 90 miles from our coast. Kansas farmers can and should be Cuba's number one supplier of commodities like sorghum, soy, wheat, and corn," Congressman Marshall said. "In our meeting, I expressed my continued support of opening markets with Cuba."

Rep. Marshall supports eliminating outdated restrictions between the U.S. and Cuba,and cosponsored the Cuba Trade Act, Americans Freedom to Travel to Cuba Act, and the Cuba Agricultural Exports Act.

"Currently Cuba imports roughly 80 percent of its food from Europe, Latin America, and Asia," Rep. Marshall said."This is a significant opportunity that is being missed due to outdated and unnecessary restrictions, at a time when farm country needs new markets the most."

While the Cuban market and population are small in comparison to the U.S., they are far from insignificant as they import nearly $500 billion in our commodities alone.
