Members of Congress to Netanyahu: Don't Demolish West Bank Village

Statement

Congresswoman Jan Schakowsky (D-Ill.), Senator Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.), Senator Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.), and Congressman John Yarmuth (D-Ky.) today released the following joint statement on Israel's planned demolition of the West Bank village of Khan al-Ahmar:

"As members of Congress who have long championed a two-state solution that guarantees Israel's security and recognizes the Palestinians' inherent right of self-determination, we call on Prime Minister Netanyahu not to demolish the Bedouin village of Khan al-Ahmar.

"The destruction of this village opens the path to isolate East Jerusalem from the West Bank, making it nearly impossible to achieve a Palestinian capital in East Jerusalem. If this village is destroyed, the feasibility of a contiguous Palestinian state is at risk.

"There is no court order requiring the prime minister to destroy this village of 180 people. The only reason to demolish Khan al-Ahmar is to acquiesce to the political demands of those who never wish to see a two-state solution become reality. We urge Prime Minister Netanyahu to reverse course and preserve the possibility of peace."
