Attorney General Janet Mills, the Democratic nominee for governor, issued the following statement on the seventeenth anniversary of September 11th:
Today, we pause to remember and mourn the nearly 3,000 lives lost, five of whom were from Maine, in an attack on our nation seventeen years ago. While our country was forever changed on that fateful day, we as Mainers and Americans came together to demonstrate in the face of terror that the American spirit could not be quelled. Indeed, out of the despair of that day arose a renewed sense of hope, out of the fear arose a renewed sense of courage, and out of divisions that existed arose a renewed sense of unity. Today, as we think about those we so tragically lost and pay tribute to the heroic first responders, let us also summon that same spirit and press forward in their honor.
