Letter to the Hon. Richard Shelby, the Hon. Rodney Frelinghuysen, the Hon. Patrick Leahy, and the Hon. Nita Lowey - Maintain Increased Funding Secured for Neighborworks in Continued Efforts to Address Nevada's Affordable Housing Problem

Letter

Date: Sept. 20, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Dear Chairman Shelby, Vice Chair Leahy, Chairman Frelinghuysen, and Ranking Member Lowey,

As you continue conference negotiations on the Interior-Environment, Financial Services, Transportation-Housing-Urban Development, and Agriculture spending bill for Fiscal Year 2019 (the third "minibus"), we respectfully request that the Senate recede to the House with respect to funding for the Neighborhood Reinvestment Corporation, known as NeighborWorks America. H.R. 6147, as amended by the Senate, funds NeighborWorks at $145 million, whereas H.R. 6072, as reported favorably by the House Appropriations Committee, appropriates a total of $150 million.

NeighborWorks America is a congressionally-chartered nonprofit that provides financial support, technical assistance, leadership development, and training for community-based development in the United States. NeighborWorks America partners with nearly 250 organizations focused on providing access to homeownership and to safe and affordable rental housing.

This past March, we sent a bipartisan letter (enclosed) to the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Transportation, Housing and Urban Development, and Related Agencies (T-HUD) with 72 of our colleagues, requesting that appropriators fund NeighborWorks at $150 million. We were therefore extremely pleased to see the House Appropriations Committee pass an FY2019 T-HUD funding bill that included our request of $150 million for NeighborWorks.

As such, we respectfully request that the Senate recede to the House Appropriations Committee funding levels for NeighborWorks in the FY19 minibus, and ensure that this program can continue to create opportunities for people to live in affordable homes.

Thank you for your consideration of this request.

Sincerely,
