Rosen Signs on to Legislation Aimed at Addressing the Material Mortality Rate as Part of Her Fight to Protect Women's Health Care

Statement

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03), a member of the Democratic Women's Working Group, announced her co-sponsorship of two bills that aim to address the country's maternal mortality rate as a result of birth-related complications. The Mothers and Offspring Mortality and Morbidity Awareness (MOMMA) Act would extend Medicaid access for maternal health care for a full year after delivery and also direct the Center for Disease Control (CDC) to work with states to collect data on official maternal mortality rates, data which is not currently collected in the United States. Additionally, the Ending Maternal Mortality Act would require the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) to design and implement a strategy to cut preventable maternal deaths in half over the next decade. This legislation would support the establishment of maternal mortality review committees in states that do not have them, such as Nevada.

"The U.S. maternal mortality rate is among the highest of developed nations around the world, and it's past time for Congress take action to fix it," said Rosen. "We need to make ending preventable maternal deaths a national priority. That's why I've signed on to legislation to help implement a strategy to prevent more women from losing their life to pregnancy complications. I remain committed to working in Congress to provide women everywhere with access to quality health care."

BACKGROUND: Congresswoman Rosen is a supporter of a number of bills aimed at providing women with continued and improved access to healthcare, such as:

The Preventing Maternal Deaths Act (H.R. 1318), which directs HHS to partner with States to design a strategy to combat maternal mortality, including creating recommendations to improve practices for expectant mothers struggling with substance abuse mental health disorders.

The EACH Woman Act (H.R. 771), which would repeal the Hyde Amendment, lifting the ban on insurance coverage for abortion services for women in Medicare, Medicaid, and the Children's Health Insurance Program.

The Women's Health Protection Act (H.R. 1322), a bill to prohibit states from imposing arbitrary restrictions on women's access to abortion providers.

The Global HER Act (H.R. 671), which reverses the Trump Administration's global gag rule barring international organizations that receive U.S. financial aid from talking about abortions to patients.

The Protect Access to Birth Control Act (H.R. 4082), which would repeal the Trump Administration's rule allowing virtually any employer or insurance company to deny contraception coverage based on general religious exceptions.

The Access to Contraception for Women Servicemembers and Dependents Act (H.R. 2180), which would ensure that all servicemembers and their dependents who rely on the military for health care have access to birth control coverage.
