Issue Position: Investing in our Infrastructure

Issues: Infrastructure

South Carolina's infrastructure -- including our ports, roads, and rail -- represents a central engine of our economic growth. We have unparalleled distribution and logistics capabilities: one of the nation's fastest-growing container ports, two innovate inland ports, 2,300 miles of rail lines and more than 41,000 miles of state-maintained highways. 208 million people live within two days drive.

As governor, I am working to:

Prioritize the efficient expenditure of tax dollars on roads by reforming the Department of Transportation Commission. I vetoed the gas tax -- the largest tax increase in state history -- because it failed to address systemic flaws at DOT. As governor, I have also appointed six new commissioners who share my belief that conservative, pro-taxpayer reform is needed to bring accountability to the system.
Deepen the Charleston Harbor to become the deepest port on the East Coast, allowing for more the influx of more container volume.
Complete I-73 to enhance access to the Grand Strand and Pee Dee regions, creating as many as 30,000 new jobs and pumping billions into our economy.
Complete the I-526 extension across Johns and James Islands.
