Location: Washington, DC

This week, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) addressed members of the Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce in Washington, DC. In her speech, Rosen announced the introduction of her Hire Student Veterans Act, bipartisan legislation that would expand the existing Work Opportunity Tax Credit (WOTC) to ensure that all student veterans using their GI benefits can take advantage of valuable paid internships or work opportunities while in school.

"The Las Vegas Metro Chamber of Commerce is an important advocate for our business community in Southern Nevada, and I'm proud to work with them to fight for a stronger, more diversified economy with more job opportunities in my district," said Rosen. "I had the chance to announce the introduction of my bipartisan Hire Student Veterans Act, which will help those who bravely serve our nation when they're studying and transitioning back into civilian life and will support businesses that make the decision to hire student veterans. I'm committed to working with Southern Nevada's business leaders on advocating for our fair share in federal funding and to see that pro-growth projects such as I-11 go on as planned. I'll also continue standing strong against efforts to revive Yucca Mountain so that we can build towards a brighter future for Nevada."

"Ensuring we have a strong workforce pipeline is essential to strengthening Nevada's economy and competing for economic development opportunities. The Las Vegas Metro Chamber appreciates Congresswoman Rosen introducing the Hire Student Veterans Act that connects student veterans with job experiences. By helping businesses provide paid internships, student veterans are able to get the work experiences they need to obtain good paying jobs and develop sustainable careers," said Mary Beth Sewald, president and CEO of the Las Vegas Metro Chamber.

BACKGROUND: The Hire Student Veterans Act will automatically qualify employers who hire veterans using their GI Bill benefits for the Work Opportunity Tax Credit's (WOTC) 40% tax credit on the first $6,000 of a new employee's first-year wages; reduce the 400-hour work requirement to 120 hours if a newly-hired employee is a veteran using their GI Bill benefits, allowing a student veteran to work part-time, including in a paid internship during the summer or semester; and directly incentivize employers to hire more student veterans for part-time work and paid internships. Roughly 56,000 veterans call Nevada's 3rd Congressional District home.

Rosen was one of a small group of Democrats to receive the U.S. Chamber's Spirit of Enterprise Award this year, which is given annually to members of Congress based on their votes on critical business legislation as outlined in the Chamber's "How They Voted " scorecard.

A report by Quorum Analytics ranked Rosen as one of the most bipartisan freshmen members of the House of Representatives in the 115th Congress. According to the report, 41 percent of the legislation Rosen has co-sponsored was introduced by a Republican, making her the fifth-most bipartisan freshman member in the House.
