Statement of the Hon. Rosa L. DeLauro
Resignation of FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford
WASHINGTON, D.C. - House Appropriations Agriculture Subcommittee Ranking Member Rosa L. DeLauro (Conn.-3) today released the following statement on the resignation of FDA Commissioner Lester Crawford. DeLauro's subcommittee has jurisdiction over the FDA budget.
"Serious scientific and management challenges have plagued the Food and Drug Administration. The past year has been particularly difficult for this agency with the flu vaccine fiasco, the Vioxx recall and ongoing safety concerns regarding medical devices.
"I had hoped that Dr. Crawford would be able to turn the agency around and looked forward to working with him. We had frank exchanges in public and private.
"The Food and Drug Administration should not put politics before science and the American people. It must uphold its duty to ensure the safety of our food and drug supply and protect the public health. In choosing a nominee to head this agency, I am hopeful the Administration will use this opportunity to work to restore the public's confidence in the FDA."
