Dear Acting Chairman Buerkle,

I write to urge the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) to take action to protect children from the hazard presented by Mystical Fire flame colorant.

Mystical Fire comes in small packets that are meant to be thrown directly into a campfire to change the color of the flames. The packets contain the colorant copper sulfate that can cause vomiting, burns and organ failure if ingested. While the packaging warns adults to keep the product away from children, the packets strongly resemble the wrappers of a popular candy. At least four toddlers in Minnesota have been sickened after ingesting the product.

In light of the recent poisonings, I am concerned that the packaging of Mystical Fire is insufficient to keep children from ingesting its contents. I urge you to evaluate the packaging and work with manufacturers to ensure that it adequately prevents children from accessing its contents.

I look forward to your prompt response on what actions the CPSC will take to protect children from poisoning.
