Congressman Veasey Introduces Bipartisan Energy Research Legislation

Statement

Today, Congressman Marc Veasey (D-TX), Ranking Member of the Science Committee's Energy Subcommittee, along with Congressman David B. McKinley, P.E. (R-WV) and Science Committee Ranking Member Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX) introduced H.R. 5745, the Fossil Energy Research and Development Act of 2018. The bill would reauthorize research activities in the Department of Energy's Office of Fossil Energy and set priorities for the next generation of clean energy technologies that will help to keep the United States as the world's energy leader.

"I'm pleased to introduce a comprehensive, proactive authorization of research, development, and demonstration programs for fossil energy" said Congressman Veasey. "These activities will grow the economy while helping to reduce emissions. With research into these technologies, we will reduce uncertainty so business can continue to invest and create jobs in the energy industry."

"This bill would authorize incredibly important research activities at the Department of Energy that will allow us to capture, store, utilize, remove, and find alternative uses for carbon dioxide," said Rep. Eddie Bernice Johnson (D-TX), Ranking Member of the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology. "Developing these methods and technologies will help us reduce our emissions and set the U.S. on the path to a vibrant clean energy economy in the coming decades. I am proud to partner with Congressman Veasey and Congressman McKinley in this effort."

The legislation is the first comprehensive reauthorization of DOE's Fossil Energy Office in more than a decade. The bill would focus the office's work on carbon capture, utilization, and sequestration, carbon dioxide removal, improvements in efficiency, and methane leak detection.
