Cornyn, Cruz Bill to Rename Laredo Courthouse Heads to President's Desk

Statement

U.S. Senators John Cornyn (R-TX) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) released the following statements after the U.S. House of Representatives passed their bill to rename Laredo's federal courthouse the "George P. Kazen Federal Building and United States Courthouse." This bill passed the Senate last month, and now it will head to President Trump's desk to be signed into law.

"Judge Kazen has served as a leader both in the Air Force and in our nation's judicial system, and I commend Rep. Henry Cuellar and our colleagues in the House for passing this legislation to honor his legacy at Laredo's federal courthouse," said Sen. Cornyn. "I look forward to the President signing this bill into law so that current residents and future generations of Laredo can be inspired by Judge Kazen's public service."

"I am gratified my colleagues in the House recognize Judge Kazen's honorable service to the great state of Texas," Sen. Cruz said. "Having served as a United States District Judge for over 40 years and as an officer in the U.S. Air Force, naming the courthouse in Laredo after him will serve as a lasting testament to his legacy."

Judge Kazen has been an integral part of the Laredo community for decades. After finishing his service in the United States Air Force, Judge Kazen returned to his hometown of Laredo to practice law. After earning a nomination from President Jimmy Carter in 1979, he has spent decades as a U.S. District Judge for the Southern District of Texas. Outside of the courtroom, Judge Kazen is a stalwart of his community, serving numerous civic organizations in South Texas.
