MIAMICongressman Mario Diaz-Balart (R-Fla.) today praised President Bush's appointment of Miami-native R. David Paulison as the new director of FEMA.
"President Bush has made a great choice to serve as the new FEMA director," Diaz-Balart said. "Mr. Paulison was a rock for Miami-Dade County during the days and weeks following Hurricane Andrew and was instrumental in helping develop a better emergency management system. He has ample experience in handling natural disasters and has demonstrated the ability to prepare localities against potential catastrophes. I cannot think of anyone who has exhibited the experience, ability and know-how any better than Mr. Paulison."
Since 2003, Paulison has served as the director of the Preparedness Division of the Emergency Preparedness & Response Directorate/FEMA, in the newly created Department of Homeland Security. Before joining FEMA, Paulison, who has 30 years of fire rescue services experience, was chief of the Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Department where he oversaw the county's emergency management office. His hands-on emergency management experience includes Hurricane Andrew and the crash of ValuJet Flight 592.
