U.S. Senator Marco Rubio (R-FL) today praised the U.S. Treasury Department for imposing new Global Magnitsky Act sanctions against Nicaraguan National Police Commissioner Francisco Javier Diaz Madriz and Secretary of Managua Mayor's Office Fidel Antonio Moreno Briones for human rights abuses, and against Jose Francisco Lopez Centeno, Vice President of ALBA de Nicaragua (ALBANISA) and President of Petronic, for engaging in corrupt activities:

"I commend the Trump Administration for listening to our bipartisan calls to sanction individuals responsible for human rights abuses and corruption in Nicaragua. Amid the country's growing crisis, time is running out for Daniel Ortega to hold early, free and fair elections."

On June 25, 2018, Rubio led a group of seven Senators in introducing S.Res. 556, a bipartisan resolution that urges the President to impose sanctions under the Global Magnitsky Human Rights Accountability Act against members of the Ortega regime and other Nicaraguan individuals responsible for extrajudicial killings, torture, and other human rights abuses, as well as for corruption.
