Today, Gil Cisneros, Fmr. Lieutenant Commander who is running for Congress in California's 39th Congressional District, released the following statement on the six-month mark since House Republicans voted to pass the Tax Cuts & Jobs Act, which eliminated tax savings and the individual mandate in the Affordable Care Act:
"Six months after House Republicans voted to pass a massive tax handout to big corporations and special interests, working class families are paying the price. Between the elimination and capping of state and local taxes (SALT) and property tax deductions, the average taxpayer and homeowner in the 39th lost over $11,000 in savings. Now, Speaker Ryan is threatening to make devastating cuts to Medicare, Social Security, and the Children's Health Insurance Program, all to cover up for his self-created deficit. Families deserve better than to have Washington special interests play games with their hard-earned dollars and benefits.
"Equally as devastating is that as a result of the tax scam, 36,000 fewer people in our district will have health insurance, leading to higher premiums for families. I know what it's like to have to live without health insurance. My dad lost his health insurance when his workplace had to make cuts and our family had to constantly juggle paying the bills or going to the hospital. No family should ever have to choose between paying for a roof over their head and life-saving care, yet Congressman Ed Royce gave this disastrous scam his stamp of approval and Young Kim has remained silent.
"We need leaders in Washington who will be accountable to the hard-working taxpayers and families in their district. In Congress, I'll defend the Affordable Care Act and push to reinstate the individual mandate so that more families can have quality, accessible care. I'll also work to ensure everyone pays their fair share, especially corporate special interests and big banks. We need to invest in hard-working families and ensure everyone is given the opportunity to live a healthy, secure, and dignified life."
