South Dakota's New Child Seat Program Helps Parents Learn Proper Child Seat Use and Installation

Saturday, Oct. 8, 2005, marks the launch of the state's new child seat program: Project 8, to help educate South Dakota's parents and guardians about proper child seat use and installation.

"Project 8 is our goal to keep kids safe by making sure they are in the best child seat for their height and weight, until they are at least 8 years old," said Gov. Mike Rounds. "I have proclaimed October 8 as Project 8 day in South Dakota because I believe this will help to keep our children healthy and safe."

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) most children need to ride in a car seat until they are at least 8 years old. At 8 years, most children are the appropriate height and weight (4'9'' and more than 80 pounds) to safely ride in a seatbelt.

On Saturday, Oct. 8, Project 8 programs across South Dakota are inviting parents and guardians to the Project 8 kickoff event nearest them. Car seat technicians will teach parents about proper car seat use and installation:
