Hoyer Statement on National POW/MIA Recognition Day
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:
Friday, September 16, 2005
WASHINGTON, DC - Congressman Steny H. Hoyer (MD) released the following statement today in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day, which is today:
"Today we remember some of America's bravest soldiers, those who faced combat and fell behind enemy lines, and became prisoners of war (POWs) or missing in action (MIAs). They deserve the gratitude of the nation for which they fought so valiantly and our unconditional pledge to never forget.
"I am happy to say that all of the American POWs who were captured by the Iraqis in the initial phase of Operation Iraqi Freedom have been returned to the U.S., and that the remains of all those listed as MIA have now been recovered. However, there is one U.S. Army soldier who remains listed as a POW. He was captured by Iraqi insurgents nearly a year and a half ago, and we pray for the safe return of Pfc. Keith Maupin.
"I admire all the fine men and women who risk life and limb - and potential enemy capture - to serve our country and protect our freedom. On this day, we think of prisoners of war and those still listed as missing in action from previous wars, and hope that no other American soldiers need join their ranks.
"From the Middle East to America's Gulf Coast region, the members of the U.S. Military are performing acts of bravery and generosity on a daily basis. They are truly a shining example of service and sacrifice that should make all Americans proud."
