Issue Position

I am committed to bringing more jobs to Virginia and getting our economy moving in the right direction again. I support cutting taxes for families and small businesses. In December, I supported the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act which is bringing fairer taxes, more jobs, and bigger paychecks to Virginians. This tax legislation provided a much needed tax cut to Main Street, allowing our small business community to flourish. This bill is pro-business, pro-family, and pro-America. It doubles the Child Tax Credit and preserves the Adoption Tax Credit; allows working-class families to keep more of what they earn; cuts the corporate tax rate to make the United States competitive on the world stage, and ensures companies can't shelter revenue overseas to avoid being taxed. Constituents are already feeling the positive effects of this legislation with more money in their paychecks, but also in the community. Hundreds of companies across the country, including in VA-01, are announcing millions in bonuses as well as plans to hire more employees. I am committed to expanding workforce development opportunities. Virginia is home to the best educational and training institutions in the country, and I am dedicated to keeping our workforce here with high-paying jobs. It is critical that we are preparing our students for the jobs that our workforce demands, whether that be through a four-year, two-year, or technical program. I had legislation signed into law this year called the Domestic Maritime Centers of Excellence Act that advances the capabilities of two-year community and technical colleges to assist the federal government and maritime industry in securing the talent pipeline for domestic maritime jobs. I am constantly working to connect students with leaders in the workforce so that they are able to communicate what skills they need. I have voted in favor of legislation that would works to better match students' skills with in-demand careers in the Commonwealth. I believe we must cut red tape. Small businesses are constantly stifled by over burdensome regulations. I have heard those on Main Streets across the district that they are facing more challenges that ever, and what they really need is for Washington to get out of the way. I cosponsored and voted for the Regulations from the Executive in Need of Scrutiny (REINS) Act (H.R.367) which requires Congress approval before any new major regulation. This puts the power back in the hands of the people. I also have supported "one in, one out" legislation which says that if a federal agency wants a new regulation, it must get rid of an old one.
