Rep. Suozzi Works to Assist Veterans to Transition to Skilled Civilian Employment

Statement

Congressman Tom Suozzi (D-L.I. | Queens) made the following statement after his amendment was accepted into the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA). Mr. Suozzi's amendment seeks to assist veterans who learned special skills while in service to utilize those skills when transitioning back to civilian life. The full House of Representatives is slated to vote on the NDAA later this month.

"Many soldiers are engaged in high skilled jobs while in the military (i.e. welders, electricians, mechanics, installation and repair technicians, computer support specialists, carpenters, masons, plumbers, etc.) yet transitioning with those skills to the private sector remains a challenge. Many states and localities require state certification or licensing. My amendment requires the GAO to study what the Department of Defense is doing to assist with this transition. With that information we can improve these transition efforts."

"I'm thankful that issues crucial to our Veteran community are being addressed in the NDAA. I am mission-driven in Congress to take care of those brave men and women who have served our nation in uniform and to grow the American economy by creating more good jobs at good wages. My amendment combines these two goals by making it easier for our talented, dedicated servicemembers to find the jobs they deserve when they finish their time in uniform."
