Rosen Amendment to Make Domestic Violence a Crime Under the U.S. Military Code of Justice Passes the House Armed Services Committee

Today, Congresswoman Jacky Rosen (NV-03) released the following statement after successfully passing an amendment through the House Armed Services Committee that would make domestic violence a crime under the U.S. Code of Military Justice (UCMJ).

Rosen's amendment is based on bipartisan legislation she introduced with Congresswoman Lynn Jenkins (R-KS) in December 2017. The Military Domestic Violence Reporting Enhancement Act (H.R. 4639) would prevent convicted domestic abusers from purchasing firearms by making domestic violence a criminal offense, closing a dangerous loophole in the UCMJ. Currently, a domestic violence conviction is categorized as assault because an article for domestic violence does not exist.

"I'm proud to see my bipartisan amendment pass through committee unanimously," said Rosen. "We are one step closer to getting rid of this dangerous loophole in the UCMJ that allows dangerous individuals convicted of domestic abuse to buy firearms, and I will work to ensure this commonsense measure continues to move forward and gets signed into law."
