Fischer Statement on President Trump's Iran Deal Decision

U.S. Senator Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), a senior member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, released the following statement today after President Donald Trump announced his decision to terminate the Iran nuclear deal:

"I support our president's decision to withdraw from the Iran nuclear deal. From the beginning, I opposed this deal primarily because it traded permanent sanctions relief for only a temporary delay in Iran's nuclear ambitions. Nevertheless, I approved of President Trump's effort to work with our allies to address this problem and the deal's other major flaws. The international community has had ample opportunity to join with the United States in crafting a better agreement; it has chosen not to do so. I believe his decision to exit the deal and re-impose sanctions on Iran increases our leverage and raises the likelihood of a better deal that protects our long-term national security interests."

Senator Fischer serves as the Chairman of the Subcommittee on Strategic Forces, which oversees our nation's nuclear weapons, ballistic missile defense, national security space programs, and Department of Energy national security programs.
