Letter to the Hon. Paul D. Ryan, Speaker of the House - Classified Briefing on Steps Being Taken to Protect Integrity of Our Elections

Dear Mr. Speaker:

On January 6, 2017, the Intelligence Community presented their clear assessment that the Russians disrupted our 2016 elections. For more than a year, House Democrats have requested a classified briefing on steps being taken to protect the integrity of our elections.

Your announcement of this long-awaited briefing as unclassified does not recognize the gravity of the assault on our electoral system. Only a classified briefing would address the seriousness of the attack on our democracy.

I urge you to make this important briefing classified to honor Members' need to know, to recognize the prospect of further damage to our democratic system and to fulfill our responsibilities to our nation.

We are in the midst of an election season, and there is no time to waste. The integrity of our very democracy is at stake!
