Statement

Date: May 9, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, President Donald Trump announced that North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has agreed to release three unjustly imprisoned U.S. citizens:

"I was pleased to learn North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un has agreed to free American citizens Kim Dong-chul, Tony Kim, and Kim Hak-song from North Korean custody. Two of these men had been held in captivity since last year, and one of them had been imprisoned since 2015. Thankfully, all three of these individuals appear to be in good health.

"In his foreign policy efforts, President Trump has consistently demonstrated the ability to peacefully negotiate from a position of strength and confidence. This latest good news from North Korea is a testament to the President's persistence and a very encouraging development in the lead-up to further negotiations with Kim Jong-Un. Additionally, I would like to commend Secretary of State Mike Pompeo for his tireless work on the ground to secure this great outcome."
