CONGRESSMAN ADERHOLT CONTINUES EFFORTS TO REDUCE GAS PRICES

"Something must be done to relieve the burden that high gas prices have placed on hardworking Americans and our industries," said Congressman Aderholt.

Congressman Robert Aderholt (R-Haleyville) today announced that he is an original cosponsor of the Gas Tax Relief Act (H.R. 3683). This legislation would ease some of the financial burden at the pump, caused by current market prices, by suspending the 18.4 cent federal excise tax on gasoline for 30 days.

"Gas prices are as high as they have ever been and we are all feeling the burden. Hurricane Katrina significantly added to an already pressing problem. Drastic measures must be taken to counter the effect of that storm and bring down prices at the pump," said Congressman Aderholt.

Proceeds from the federal gasoline tax now go into the Highway Trust Fund, which is dedicated to highway programs. The revenue lost during the 30 day suspension of the tax would be replaced by general revenue from the federal treasury.

"I will continue to seek ways to make gas more available and affordable," added the congressman.
