Washington, D.C. - Congresswoman Betty McCollum (MN-04) issued the following statement in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition Day on Friday, September 16th:

"On September 16th, our nation recognizes National POW/MIA Recognition Day, and pays tribute to all U.S. servicemen and women who served our country in past wars, who have been listed as POWs or MIA, and to their families. The sacrifices and service of America's veterans, including those who became prisoners of war or who went missing in action, have protected freedom for America and helped to bring freedom to millions around the world. These patriotic men and women defended our country in hours of need, risking capture, imprisonment, and their lives to protect our homeland.

In Minnesota, a 24-hour vigil at the State Capitol is being organized by the Arnold Air Society, along with cadets from the University of Minnesota ROTC program in honor of National POW/MIA Recognition day. At the opening ceremony and vigil, Minnesotans will pause to honor the sacrifices and remarkable determination of those captured as prisoners of war. We also remember those who remain unaccounted for. Our nation will never forget these heroes, and we will never stop searching for our service members who are missing in action. The thoughts and prayers of a grateful nation are with their families

National POW/MIA Recognition Day serves as a reminder of our continued commitment to those still missing and those imprisoned while serving in World War II, Korea, Vietnam, the Persian Gulf, Somalia, Kosovo, Iraq and other conflicts. We remain grateful for their service and sacrifice and pledge to continue to achieve the fullest possible accounting for all of our men and women in uniform still missing."
