DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING FEMA DIRECTOR'S RESIGNATION
U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) today made the following statement regarding the announcement that Michael Brown, Director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has resigned:
"By offering his resignation, Michael Brown did the right thing. Mr. Brown's mismanagement of the federal response to Hurricane Katrina was well-documented, and his resignation now gives us an opportunity to bring leadership to the task of relief and rebuilding."
"I call on President Bush to direct his Administration to do everything within their power to ensure the success of the ongoing relief effort and to ensure that the billions of dollars we have appropriated are spent responsibly. In appointing a new FEMA Director, the President must find a real professional to take the reins of America's lead disaster relief agency."
