Governor Warner Announces Members of Northern and Central Virginia BRAC Working Groups
Governor Mark R. Warner today appointed members to serve on the Northern Virginia and Central Virginia BRAC Working Groups.
The Northern Virginia BRAC working group will address the recommendations issued in August by the 2005 BRAC Commission that called for the movement of more than 20,000 jobs out of leased office space in Arlington and Alexandria, the addition of approximately 15,000 personnel at Fairfax County's Fort Belvoir, and other changes within the region.
The Central Virginia working group will address recommendations that call for increasing by approximately 7,000 the number of civilian and military personnel who will permanently work or spend time as students at Fort Lee near Petersburg, as well as other changes.
"This BRAC round will result in significant challenges especially for localities in Northern Virginia, with some enduring job significant job losses and leased space vacancy rates even as neighboring jurisdictions deal with a major influx of new workers," Governor Warner said. "The retention of the military's primary research agencies in Arlington with the greatest positive economic impact could, in fact, present opportunities for Arlington that this group can explore."
"I expect the Northern Virginia and the Central Virginia Working Groups to consider the potential impacts of these job shifts on their respective regions - impacts on transportation, education and housing, to name a few. The working groups will operate under the auspices of the Virginia Commission on Military Bases, and provide us with both the immediate and longer term vision to respond to the changes caused by 2005 BRAC process."
Members of the working groups are expected to report their findings and recommendations to the Governor no later than December 1, 2005.
Governor Warner will name members to the Peninsula BRAC Working Group in coming days.
