Congressman Kevin Cramer issued the following statement after President Trump and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe began talks on a bilateral trade agreement between the U.S. and Japan.
During the meeting yesterday, Prime Minister Abe was in agreement with President Trump affirming the importance of free and open trade in the Indo-Pacific region.
"I am pleased President Trump and Prime Minister Abe have agreed to start working toward a bilateral free and fair trade agreement benefiting both the U.S. and Japan," said Cramer. "These discussions are another positive step for our agricultural producers -- in the last three weeks Japan has lowered tariffs on U.S. beef and opened its pacific market to America's competitive corn-based ethanol exports. A bilateral free trade agreement with Japan will provide additional incentives to producers."
Cramer has expressed support for increasing U.S. exports globally, recognizing the benefits it poses to the economy and North Dakota producers.
