Help Texas with the Hurricane Katrina Relief Efforts

Many Texans have already generously answered the call to help the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Those who are still interested in donating food in the Dallas area can take non-perishable food to the Salvation Army Crisis Center at Harry Hines and Shorecrest for delivery to the affected areas. You can visit the Salvation Army website for more information.

Texans are good people and the generous neighbors of North Texas should be applauded for their efforts to mobilize our resources to help those in need. I encourage everyone who would like to donate to the relief effort to visit the American Red Cross' website or call them at 1-800-HELP-NOW (1-800-435-7669). The Volunteer Center of North Texas is also coordinating volunteers. For more information,call 1-866-797-8268.

If you know of any refuges that need assistance, please have them call FEMA at 800-621-FEMA or register on the website at: www.fema.gov. Harris County Emergency Management is in charge of the refuges at the Astrodome and has asked for people to call the Harris County Citizens Corp at 281-564-6669 to volunteer. You can also send: baby Formula, diapers, baby wipes, canned meats, peanut butter, bread, canned vegetables, canned fruits, soups, ramen noodles, and can openers to Houston Food Bank located at 3811 Eastex Freeway or contact them at (713) 223-3700 or www.houstonfoodbank.org
