Gianforte Welcomes Ag Exemption From Federal Mandate

Statement

Montana Congressman Greg Gianforte welcomed the recent announcement from the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) that it would delay the implementation of its electronic logging devices (ELD) regulation for agriculture related industries.

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) will provide a 90-day temporary waiver of the ELD mandate for agriculture related transportation.

"The ELD rule is another example of Washington overreach. While the temporary waiver is a step in the right direction, I remain opposed to the ELD mandate. We must continue working toward a permanent solution," Gianforte said.

Gianforte has heard from Montanans about the burden the regulation will impose on the state's livestock haulers and the stress it will place on livestock.

Background:

In February 2018, Gianforte urged the FMCSA to rein in CDL regulations that impact Montana's recreational rodeo competitors.

In November 2017, Gianforte requested that the DOT provide an exception from the ELD mandate for loading time for ag products.

In September 2017, Gianforte sponsored the ELD Extension Act, H.R. 3282, which would delay the implementation of the ELD regulation for two years.

Also in September, Gianforte voted for the ELD Extension Act as part of a larger bill.
