Congresswoman Claudia Tenney Leads Letter Urging Appropriators for Increased Funding for Secure Our Schools Program

Today, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (R-NY) is calling for an additional $150 million in funding for the Secure Our Schools (SOS) grant program. Rep. Tenney led a letter to the Subcommittee on Commerce, Justice, Science and Related Agencies requesting increased funding for Fiscal Year 2019 (FY19). This increased funding could be used to hire School Resource Officers, train staff and students, develop emergency plans, and purchase metal detectors and other violence prevention and emergency equipment

"In light of recent tragic incidents of school's violence, it is imperative that SOS funding is prioritized in the subcommittee's FY19 budget. It is vital that our schools have access to security equipment, safety personnel and technological advances to protect students, teachers, and staff members," said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney. "As Congress works to enact meaningful, lasting solutions to ensure the safety and security of our students, I will continue to fight for funding to support our local schools. It must be our priority in Congress to address the intolerable violence that occurs in schools nationwide."

Rep. Tenney recently attended the Utica School Safety Summit where she learned more about the safety needs of local schools. Recently, Utica College was on lockdown due to a received threat from an individual who stated he was armed with a weapon on campus. Rep. Tenney also cosponsored and voted to pass the STOP School Violence Act, which passed the House last week.
