Stopping School Violence Before It Happens

Statement

Date: March 14, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Today, the U.S. House of Representatives passed H.R. 4909, the STOP School Violence Act. Congressman Bill Flores (R-Texas) issued the following statement regarding passage of the bill:

"Identifying the early signs of violent behavior is a vital part of protecting our schools from potential threats. The STOP School Violence Act provides critical resources to our schools to train students, teachers, administrators and law enforcement to recognize and respond to the early warning signs of school violence. This bipartisan bill takes important steps to improve public safety and create a safer environment at our children's schools.

"As we continue working to improve public safety, it is important to note that last December the House took an important step forward in voting to strengthen the reporting requirements for the National Instant Criminal Background Check System. It is time for the Senate to take action on that legislation as well as pass the STOP School Violence Act."
