Hoyer Hosts Women's Equality Day Lunch, Discussion with Local Leaders

Hoyer, Local Women Leaders Discuss Access to Health Care and Economic Issues

CLINTON, MD - Congressman Steny Hoyer (D-MD) hosted a Women's Equality Day Luncheon today to mark the anniversary of the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote. This year's luncheon focused on women's equality in health care and included local women business leaders and professionals.

"The right to vote is the right upon which all other American liberties and freedoms are based, and it is important for us to take the time to celebrate one of the greatest landmarks in American history - the ratification of the 19th Amendment giving women the right to vote," Hoyer said. "As we continue to fight to protect the voting rights of all Americans, it serves us well to look back at the lessons we learned from the suffrage movement."

"Access to quality, affordable health care is another important right, and we must make sure that women are treated fairly within the system. Exciting advances in medicine are being made daily, particularly in women's health, and educating women about new technologies and how to access them will help ensure that our families and communities are healthy and prosperous," Hoyer concluded.

Dr. Rachel Brem, Director of the Breast Imaging and Intervention Center at the George Washington University Hospital, was the guest speaker at today's event. Dr. Brem discussed important new technology in breast cancer diagnosis and treatment.

In addition to health care, the Women's Equality Day Luncheon provided a valuable opportunity for local women leaders to discuss the role that women play in the area's economy, to network with one another and to talk about women's equality.
