Letter to General John Kelly, White House Chief of Staff - Confirm Kushner Clearance Downgrade, List Others Affected

Letter

Date: Feb. 28, 2018
Location: Washington, DC

Dear General Kelly,

On February 27, 2018, a number of my colleagues in the U.S. House of Representatives and I sent you a letter in connection with your February 16, 2018 memorandum to White House Counsel Donald McGahn, National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster, and Deputy Chief of Staff for Operations Joseph Hagin regarding improvements to the national security clearance process.

According to news reports, the security clearance status of certain individuals in the Trump Administration, including Senior Advisor to the President Jared Kushner, have been downgraded.

"Kushner, along with other White House officials who had been operating on interim clearances, had their access altered last week after chief of staff John Kelly stipulated new changes to the security clearance system"[1].

I respectfully request that you confirm Mr. Kushner no longer has access to TS/SCI materials, including the President's Daily Brief, and provide Congress with a list of all staffers whose security clearances have been downgraded under the new process for security clearances and the handling of classified materials in the Trump Administration. Additionally, please clarify what steps are being taken to prevent classified material being selectively declassified and disseminated to individuals affected by the February 16 memorandum.

I thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely,
