Castro Statement on Venezuela's Presidential Elections

Statement

Congressman Joaquin Castro (TX-20), a member of the House Committee on Foreign Affairs, today released the following statement:

"Venezuelans deserve far better than the sham presidential election that President Maduro plans to hold in April. It is obvious that Maduro is silencing members of the opposition and avoiding a transparent election in an effort to evade accountability and preserve his power. This wholly undemocratic process exacerbates a growing economic and social crisis in Venezuela that has driven thousands of Venezuelans into exile. A free and fair election is the only way to give the Venezuelan people the country they so desperately deserve, and the international community must strongly support the Venezuelan people."
