DURBIN STATEMENT REGARDING THE PASSING OF CHIEF JUSTICE WILLIAM REHNQUIST

U.S. Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL) issued the following statement on the passing of Chief Justice William Rehnquist:

"I was saddened to learn of Chief Justice Rehnquist's death. He served our nation with distinction and dignity.

During his tenure on the Supreme Court, Chief Justice Rehnquist remained true to his beliefs and was respected for his unwavering commitment to the rule of law. I came to know him personally during the impeachment trial in the Senate and found him to be a very warm, thoughtful and witty individual.

The Chief Justice demonstrated courage and fortitude in his fight against cancer. And though he ultimately lost that battle, he never lost his sense of purpose or zest for life."
