Congresswoman Claudia Tenney: Senate Democrats Shine a Light on their Stunning Hypocrisies

Today, Congresswoman Claudia Tenney (NY-22) issued the following statement in response to the passage of a Continuing Resolution (CR) that re-opened the federal government:

"The Schumer Shutdown has ended. Senate Minority Leader, Chuck Schumer's ill-conceived attempt to leverage vital funding for active duty military personnel, needy children, seniors and flood victims to protect illegal immigrants failed miserably with the renewal of the CR passed today in both the House and the Senate. The new deadline for approving another CR is now February 8 instead of February 16, the only measurable change in the content of the CR from the beginning of the Schumer Shutdown on Friday until today," said Congresswoman Claudia Tenney.

"This unnecessary shutdown shines a light on Democrats' stunning hypocrisies, as all of the initiatives in the CR have been supported by the Democrats for years. The political miscalculation by Senate Minority Leader Schumer was despicable and a reckless way to govern. Had the Democrats put their self-serving agendas aside, this unnecessary shutdown could have been completely avoided," Tenney concluded.

Additionally, Rep. Tenney introduced the No Work, No Pay Act of 2018, H.R. 4870 which would require Members of Congress to forfeit their pay each day the government remains shut down. The bill was cosponsored by Rep. Jack Bergman (MI-1), Rep. Trey Hollingsworth (IN-9) and Rep. Ted Budd (NC-13). If Congress fails to do its job they too should forfeit their compensation.

Rep. Tenney also requested that the House withhold her salary until an appropriations agreement has taken effect. For each day of the shutdown, Rep. Tenney will donate her salary to needy organizations and constituents in the 22nd District hurt by the Schumer shutdown. Rep. Tenney will donate one day of her salary to the Central New York Veterans Outreach Center and the second day to the UHS New Horizons Alcohol & Chemical Dependency Treatment Center.
