Gov. Rounds Issues Executive Order to Assist in the Transportation of Gas and Oil Products on South Dakota Highways

Gov. Mike Rounds today declared by Executive Order that South Dakota will temporarily suspend the federal motor carrier safety regulations for those transporting gas and oil products on South Dakota highways. The order is in effect until midnight, CDT, September 14, 2005.

"We want to do everything we can to facilitate the movement of these products to the citizens of South Dakota if temporary oil and gas product shortages occur across our country as a result of Hurricane Katrina," said Gov. Rounds. "Here in South Dakota, we can help by conserving gas and oil products as much as possible, freeing those resources to those who need it most."

South Dakota will suspend the safety regulations and hours of service requirements to those transporters of gasoline, diesel fuel and jet fuels. Those companies will still be required to comply with controlled substance and alcohol testing, commercial drivers license requirements, financial responsibility and applicable size and weight requirements.

"Our top priority is to ensure these products remain available in South Dakota, without creating undue hardships on the suppliers and carriers," said Col Dan Mosteller, Highway Patrol superintendent.
