South Dakota Suspends Permit Fees to Help Hurricane Victims

Gov. Mike Rounds announced that starting September 1 until September 14, South Dakota will temporarily suspend permit fees for those transporting supplies and equipment on South Dakota highways to Hurricane Katrina victims.

"We want to do everything we can to help those impacted by this devastating hurricane," said Gov. Rounds. "Here in South Dakota, we can help by making it possible to quickly deliver supplies and disaster relief materials to those who need it most."

All carriers will still be required to stop at South Dakota weigh stations; however, those carriers delivering loads destined for the hurricane region will have their permits provided at no cost. South Dakota will also waive the fee for those with over-dimension and non-divisible overweight loads, such as large construction machinery. Non-divisible overweight loads will require authorization prior to entering South Dakota. Twenty-four hour movement of these vehicles will be allowed, but proper lighting and signage must be utilized.

"Our top priority is to ensure those traveling on our highways and those transporting materials are safe," said Col. Dan Mosteller, Highway Patrol superintendent.
