Lucas Statement on Emergency Aid for Victims of Hurricane Katrina

Statement

U.S. Third District Congressman Frank Lucas made the following statement regarding the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, and the U.S. House passage today of $10.5 billion in emergency relief to respond to the disaster:

"Our citizens have been dealt a disaster of epic proportions. The federal government has a responsibility to continue the rescue operations, to provide food and water to people left stranded, to help restore power, and to bring order to the streets. The President has responded by bringing the full force of the executive branch to tackle the enormous challenges that lie ahead, as well as by visiting with the citizens of the Gulf Coast to give them hope, and to let them know we are here to help.

"In Congress, we acted quickly to pass emergency funding to help keep the relief operations going without interruption. When my congressional district faced the disaster of the Oklahoma City bombing, I went to my colleagues in Congress and asked for assistance to help us get back on our feet. They responded then, and we have responded today.

"The Gulf Coast has been knocked to the canvas. But once again, Americans are coming together to help our neighbors get back on their feet again."
