Statement

U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) released the following video recognizing the March for Life, which was held today in our Nation's Capital. Senator McConnell welcomed Kentuckians from across the Commonwealth to the U.S. Capitol who traveled with the Kentucky Right to Life Association for the March for Life.

Following is a transcript of the Majority Leader's message:

"Today, hundreds of thousands of Americans have gathered in Washington and around our nation. They are bearing witness to a simple, profound truth: Every human life has inherent dignity and deserves the protection of the law.

"Every year, the March for Life shines a spotlight on a national tragedy. Men, women, and children from all over our country--including many from my home state of Kentucky--come together to speak up for unborn children whom our legal system has denied the right to life.

"The marchers have every reason for righteous anger and sorrow. But instead of anger and division, they bring a message of respect, hope, and love. They represent diverse backgrounds and beliefs, but stand united as happy warriors. And even though they are protesting a grave injustice, they march with peace and even joy in their hearts.

"I welcome the marchers to Washington, especially welcome the many Kentuckians among the ranks. I particularly welcome Margie Montgomery, Executive Director of Kentucky Right to Life, and thank her for her leadership over the years. I thank them for their courage. I thank them for their passion. And I join them in their call for our country to show human life the respect it deserves.

"Soon, Congress will have an opportunity to take a step forward. Forty-four Republican Senators and I have cosponsored legislation that would protect unborn children who are capable of feeling pain.

"The United States is currently one of just seven countries -- including China and North Korea -- that permits elective abortion after 20 weeks. This long-overdue legislation would begin to remedy that. I am proud to have cosponsored it. I will be proud to vote for its passage. And I am proud today to stand with all Americans who are marching for life."
