Statement on Secretary Zinke's Report Regarding Maine's Katahdin Woods and Waters Monument

Congresswoman Congresswoman Chellie Pingree (D-Maine) released the following statement regarding new reports stating that Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke will recommend President Trump preserve Maine's Katahdin Woods and Waters Monument:

"The Trump Administration's attack on public lands is disturbing and, as has been reported, the largest elimination of protected areas in U.S. history. While I am pleased Secretary Zinke has said he'll recommend that Katahdin Woods & Waters Monument stay intact, I would like the opportunity to read his full report and ensure Maine's monument is safeguarded from the attacks Bears Ears and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monuments have suffered.

"Katahdin Woods and Waters Monument has spurred much-needed economic growth in the North Woods region and drawn thousands of new visitors to our state. It would be a mistake for the Trump Administration to reduce or revoke monument that has breathed life into Northern Maine's economy and introduced thousands to the natural beauty of Maine."

Pingree is a member of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior and the Environment, which oversees funding for the Department of the Interior.
