Congressman Adriano Espaillat Lauds Committee Passage of his Amendment to Curb Cyber Attacks

Statement

Date: Dec. 14, 2017
Issues: Foreign Affairs

During today's full committee markup on H.R. 1997, the Ukraine Cybersecurity Cooperation Act, the House Foreign Affairs Committee passed an amendment introduced by Rep. Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) that will help curb cyberattacks in the Ukraine, including through the use of social media.

"We have proof that Russia has continuously used cyberattacks to influence elections and push pro-Russia propaganda," said Rep. Espaillat. "Today's passage of my amendment to curb these cyberattacks, particularly in the Ukraine and through the use of social media, furthers our commitment to cooperating with Ukraine both bilaterally and through NATO to address cyber and other security threats.

"I call on Secretary of State Rex Tillerson to support this effort to improve the Ukraine's domestic cybersecurity capabilities in an effort to reduce its reliance on Russia and Russian technology once and for all."
