Rep. Boozman: "Ten and a half billion on its way for hurricane relief"

Washington, Sep 2 - Rep. John Boozman (R-AR) today announced that Congress approved a $10.5 billion emergency spending bill to support relief efforts for the victims of Hurricane Katrina.

H.R. 3645, the "Emergency Supplemental Appropriations Act to Meet Immediate Needs Arising From the Consequences of Hurricane Katrina" passed the House of Representatives today by voice vote.

"The devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina may turn out to be the worst damage from a natural disaster we have ever seen in America. For that reason, the House came back today to send ten and a half billion is on its way for hurricane relief," said Boozman. "We need to push the recovery to the next level and this money will help will help with the rescue, recovery and relief for those displaced by this hurricane."

Thousands of people have been displaced and are in shelters in a number of states, including Arkansas. Strategic housing planning is underway to address expected continued sheltering and eventual housing needs.

Boozman also reiterated how Arkansans can support the relief efforts.

"I again urge you to help support the relief effort in anyway. Cash donations are at the top of the list for needs, as is blood donations. As the relief effort moves toward recovery, volunteers will be needed as well. Please open your hearts to our neighbors and help them through this extremely difficult time in our history," said Boozman.
